STEFAN UWE KOSCHMIEDER, Ph.D., is a partner in the firm's Chemical Patent Prosecution group with expertise in organometallic chemistry, catalysis, polyolefin polymers, polycarbonate plastics, polymer additives, petroleum recovery and refining, and microelectronics manufacturing processes. With an M.B.A, a Ph.D. in chemistry, and several years of technical, business and marketing experience in the chemical and microelectronics industries, Dr. Koschmieder offers clients a valuable combination of legal, business and scientific expertise.

Dr. Koschmieder brings international business experience to his practice of law on both practical and academic levels. While employed in the chemical industry Dr. Koschmieder held both technical and management positions with international responsibility. He was one of four students selected as a participant of an international management study comparing Chinese and American business practices sponsored by the University of Houston College of Business, the National Sun Yat-Sen University College of Management (Kaohsiung Taiwan), and the Chinese Petroleum Corporation. Dr. Koschmieder is currently a lecturer at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany teaching Intellectual Property and Competition (Antitrust) Law.

Dr. Koschmieder counsels his domestic and foreign clients on intellectual property portfolio management and development, opinions and patent prosecution. He has successfully prosecuted patents and defended industry-leading methods for recovering petroleum resources, petroleum exploration and development, and chemical process development, design and manufacturing. Additionally, he advises his clients on inventorship, chemical and business methods, patentability, validity and enforceability and represents them before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI) and in disputes in district court litigation.

Dr. Koschmieder has published more than 40 technical papers in his field and lectures in Europe on IP matters as they apply to the energy and telecommunications industries and the impact of related regulations on global companies. A German citizen, he is a fluent German speaker and has worked for and represented German companies in the chemical and microelectronics industries.
