Our Practice Nanotechnology Practice Nanotechnology is the study of the submicron-sized world. While scientists have long known that nano-scale materials often exhibit unique properties relative to their bulk, or even relative to micron-scale counterparts, it is only within the last decade that they have begun to learn how to use these unique properties to create new, often previously unattainable, products and processes.
With the 2003 enactment by Congress of the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act (Pub. L. No. 108-153), authorizing $3.7 billion for funding of nanotech research and development and commercialization of nanotechnology inventions, the onset of the nanotechnology boom is at hand. At Oblon, Spivak, we have assembled a team of attorneys and scientists with expertise in a wide range of disciplines. We are intimately familiar with the complicated technical and legal issues surrounding nanotechnology.
Because of our team's high level of technical training, we are able to interact directly with our clients' researchers and inventors. This allows us to provide a full range of intellectual property protection and services in a cost-efficient manner. Our services include portfolio management and counseling, drafting new patent applications, prosecuting applications into patents, and assisting our clients in the enforcement of their intellectual property rights in this field. More importantly, in nanotechnology, as with other areas of technology, the technical training of our attorneys and scientists makes us fluent in the language of technology. This enables us to discuss nanotechnology inventions knowledgeably and assist U.S. Patent and Trademark Office examiners in understanding their intricacies and subtleties - all with the goal of ensuring protection for our clients' inventions.
