Alexandria, Va. -- The intellectual property law firm Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt, L.L.P., has obtained a record 5,686 U.S. utility patents issued in 2011, according to numbers provided in the March issue of IP Today magazine. Oblon Spivak obtained 2,067 more patents than the second place firm and 2,350 more than the firm which came in third place. Oblon Spivak has achieved the ranking as the top patent firm for 22 consecutive years.

“We have a unique advantage that arises from our location within the United States Patent and Trademark Office complex,” said Bradley Lytle, the firm’s managing partner. “Our attorneys, many of whom started their careers as patent examiners at the USPTO, are able to walk across the street and interview the examiners who are handling our clients’ applications, which is a great benefit.”

Many of the firm’s professional staff hold doctorates or other advanced degrees in engineering, biotechnology, physics, chemistry, and in many other technical fields. Our professionals have a deep understanding of the inventions and are able to knowingly converse with the examiners, thus quickly cutting through to the core issue on which the decision of allowing or not allowing the patent rests.

Oblon Spivak is also home to some of the most highly regarded former USPTO directors and judges. These include three former BPAI judges, the former Deputy Commissioner for Patent Examination Policy, a former Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks, and a former judge from the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Oblon Spivak is also home to the former Register of Copyrights.

The firm has a successful litigation practice, made up of attorneys with a depth of knowledge in litigating patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and unfair competition disputes in numerous federal district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission, and on appeal at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. The litigation group’s clients include some of the most widely recognized and respected companies in the world, including Toshiba, Allergan, Toyota, Subaru, Aisin Seiki, Citizen Electronics, Astellas Pharma, and Heineken.

In 2011, the firm also expanded its premier Patents Post Grants Group with the addition of leading reexamination specialist Greg Gardella. The group has defended more patents in reexamination than any other firm over the past several years. The group’s attorneys have handled many of the highest stakes reexamination matters, including the defense of the seminal TiVo DVR patents.

Assisting clients for more than 40 years, Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt, L.L.P. is one of the largest intellectual property specialty firms in the United States. The firm provides a full range of intellectual property services, including trademark, copyright and patent interference services.
