Biography

Judy Swann is a patent agent in the firm’s Electrical/Mechanical Patent Prosecution groups. Her focus is reviewing the firm’s allowed patent applications prior to their issuance to ensure high quality and completeness.  Ms. Swann corrects any potential irregularities by submitting amendments, presenting petitions and conducting interviews with examiners at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining Oblon, Ms. Swann worked at the USPTO for 34 years.  As an examiner, she worked in the areas of work holders, lifting devices, manufacturing, and electrical connectors.  In her 19 years as a Supervisory Patent Examiner, she trained examiners in a diverse group of technologies including vehicles, locks, latches, fasteners, connectors, pipe joints, miscellaneous hardware, refrigeration and cryogenics.

Throughout her career, Ms. Swann also served in various capacities at the USPTO, including the Petitions Office and the Office Patent Training as an Academy where she was both trainer and lecturer. She was part of the Patents Reengineering effort, conducting focus sessions, and data gathering. In Search and Information Resources, she assisted in computerizing the USPTO, as well as providing oversight into the creation and initial training/usage of one of its major databases. She also served a detail as Acting Director for Technology Center 3700.

During her career at the USPTO, she was elected President of the Patent and Trademark Office Society, as well as Chairman of SPECO.  She earned two Department of Commerce Bronze Medals, the USPTO Distinguished and Exceptional Career Awards, the Patent and Trademark Office Society Outstanding Service Award, and the Office of Civil Rights Directors Award for exemplary service. She was also Inducted as a Member of the Michigan Technological University Presidential Council of Alumnae.
