Jonathan (Jon) W. Parthum is a patent lawyer in the firm's Electrical Patent Prosecution practice group. Mr. Parthum provides counseling on matters such as the patentability of new inventions and drafting patent applications to protect his clients' key innovations. He also manages the firm’s Application Drafting Center and is actively involved in establishing intellectual property programs and patent portfolios for Middle Eastern Universities and companies.
Mr. Parthum further assists clients ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies by offering opinions and counseling on the full range of patent issues. These include the interplay of patents, methods to garner strategic and broad patent portfolio protection, and how to avoid infringement of competitor patents. This also includes prosecuting patent applications in a variety of technology areas such as printers, optics, consumer electronics, wireless communication, and software. In addition, Mr. Parthum has experience in the appeals process, such as drafting appeal documents and conducting oral hearings at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In the post-grant arena, Mr. Parthum has experience with inter partes reexamination proceedings as well as inter partes review proceedings.
Prior to joining Oblon, Mr. Parthum worked as a software engineer for Kollmorgen Electro-Optical and BAE Systems. At Kollmorgen, Mr. Parthum updated and tested embedded software to control optronic mast systems and also gained experience with electronic imaging and integrated sensor optics. At BAE, Mr. Parthum designed, implemented, and tested embedded software on various infrared jamming systems to control movement and tracking for laser targeting.
