Our Culture

Our goal is to be first in the practice of intellectual property law, providing clients with the highest quality of service available. The firm enjoys an excellent reputation throughout the world and represents a wide spectrum of clients. In addition to U.S. based clients, we have many clients in Japan and Europe, particularly France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland. While many of our clients are among the world's largest companies, we also represent a wide range of middle-sized and start-up organizations. We are well-known for our expertise in transactional matters, and our international reputation continues to grow as our extensive litigation practice gains broader worldwide recognition.

Many of our attorneys hold advanced degrees, including Ph.D's, and bring with them professional experience from within industry and from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Our legal professionals are among the world's best qualified lawyers, and possess legal, technical and scientific credentials second to none. Our professional image is important to us as the firm continues to expand its worldwide practice. Accordingly, our attorneys are encouraged to assume leadership roles in professional organizations such as the ABA/IPL Section, AIPLA, INTA, American Inns of Court, Virginia Bar, Computer Law Association and other professional groups. We encourage lawyers to publish articles in professional and commercial journals, as well as the JPTOS, AIPLA Journal, Intellectual Property Today and other scholarly journals focused on intellectual property law. Our attorneys specialize in either patent law or trademark and copyright law. However, within these broad areas of specialization, all have the opportunity to work in various subspecialties, including litigation. Our goal is to encourage attorneys to work in various practice areas, and then focus on the type of practice in which they feel most at-home.

The firm has a rapidly growing litigation practice which handles high profile litigation in all areas of intellectual property law. While a large percentage of litigation is in the patent area, we also engage in trademark and copyright litigation. Further, the firm has the most active interference practice in the country.

We are well-known for our expertise in patent prosecution. We draft many original U.S. applications, but are also quite active in prosecuting foreign origin applications, a highly demanding and fast-paced practice requiring excellent communication skills, as well as highly developed persuasive capabilities. In patent prosecution, we capitalize on a location close to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by frequently engaging in personal interviews with patent examiners. We find personal interviews to be one of the best ways to serve clients and advance prosecution. One of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of patent office practice is the opportunity for one-on-one interaction with patent examiners that is afforded our prosecuting attorneys on an almost daily basis.

The firm is based on a corporate structure and governed by a Board of Directors. Our clients are viewed as firm clients rather than as individual attorney clients. This approach enables us to assign cases based upon attorney expertise in a given practice area, and promote teamwork among our legal staff, while providing clients with the most effective representation.

Our goal is to create a supportive environment which fosters trust and confidence in all client, attorney and staff relationships. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere is cultivated while providing clients with an uncompromising quality of service. Teamwork is emphasized in legal practice and team spirit is encouraged through a wide range of social activities. The firm sponsors a softball team and participates in charitable fund-raising events. Each year, we host ice cream socials, birthday parties, luncheon and dinner events and a major holiday party.

Our international clients often send trainees to our office for extended periods of professional training. We promote activities designed to provide junior attorneys with opportunities to meet foreign trainees, as well as clients and client representatives, in relaxed and informal settings. The firm has a readily available supply of season tickets for Orioles, Redskins, Wizards and Caps games and encourages attendance. Golf outings, skeet shooting, white water rafting, fishing and cultural events are also planned. In the interest of continuing professional education, we regularly schedule seminars and other professional development activities.
